Paul Durette served 30 years as a law enforcement officer and retired as a federal agent and member of the Senior Executive Service in June 2014. Mr. Durette is the founder and President of First Ave Associates where he provides consulting and business development services to commercial and government organizations in the areas of security and risk management, compliance, organizational performance, leadership coaching and executive search. He also serves as a member of the Strategic Advisory Board for the Centerra Group, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, as well as a member of the Board of Advisors for the Aequus Strategy Group, in Great Falls, Virginia. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Criminology, Law and Society Department of the George Mason University.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Durette served as the Director of the Office of Compliance and Security (OCS) in the Department of Homeland Security’s National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD). Prior to becoming the Director of OCS, Mr. Durette served as the Deputy Director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service (FPS). Mr. Durette also previously served as the Acting Director of the FPS from August 2006 until April 2007, and again June 2010 through September 2010, as well as the Deputy Director for Operations from February 2004 to August 2006. With oversight of a budget authority of more than $1 billion, 1,200 law enforcement personnel and 15,000 contract security guards who protect nearly 9,000 federally-owned and leased facilities nationwide, he was responsible for a full range of investigative, protective and security capabilities, including: specialized response (canine, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction response); building security/vulnerability assessments; intelligence sharing and investigative collaboration with agencies at the local, state, and federal levels; participation on Joint Terrorism Task Forces; continuous monitoring of facility alarms and emergencies through remote dispatch control centers; and protection support for public demonstrations and special events. Between April 2003 and February 2004, Mr. Durette served as the Division Director of Criminal Intelligence and Investigations at FPS Headquarters.
Prior to his tenure with the Department of Homeland Security, Mr. Durette served 13 years with the United States Marshals Service (USMS). Mr. Durette began his USMS career as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Washington, D.C., and later served in the Districts of Vermont, as well as in the District of Massachusetts where he served as a Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal and Assistant Chief Deputy. He also served in the Judicial Security Division at USMS Headquarters as a Senior Inspector and Acting Chief Inspector where he managed three high-profile national programs: Court Security, Witness Security, and Protective Investigations.
Mr. Durette began his law enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire in 1984. He is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and has attended numerous law enforcement, security, and management/leadership training courses throughout his career.
